Your First International Trip from the Philippines: The Complete Pre-Flight Guide

Ang unang international trip ay exciting — at nakakakaba. Hindi dahil mahirap, kundi dahil walang nagtuturo ng buong proseso nang sabay-sabay. Eto na 'yun: everything between booking your ticket and boarding your flight.

Step 1: Know what your destination requires

Every country has different rules for the PH passport — 13 destinations are visa-free (from Taiwan's 14 days to Brazil's 90), others need e-visas or full applications. Check your destination on our visa checker — bawat bansa may sariling page with requirements, show money guidance, and the current 'last checked' date.

Watch for the quiet requirements: arrival cards. Singapore (SGAC), Thailand (TDAC), Malaysia (MDAC), Cambodia (CeA), Taiwan (TWAC), Indonesia — lahat may free online arrival card na kailangan bago ka lumapag. All free, all impersonated by scam sites that charge. Official government sites only.

Step 2: eTravel — your QR code (LIBRE ito!)

Every Filipino leaving and returning files the eTravel declaration at etravel.gov.ph — within 72 hours before your flight. It generates a QR code you'll show at the airport. It is completely free; the Bureau of Immigration itself has warned about fake sites charging for it.

File it the night before your flight, screenshot the QR, and keep a copy offline.

Step 3: Travel tax — who pays, who doesn't

The Philippine travel tax is ₱1,620 (economy) or ₱2,700 (first/business). Sometimes it's already baked into your ticket — check your fare breakdown. If not, pay online via TIEZA or inside eTravel before your flight. OFWs with a valid OEC and several other categories are exempt.

Status note: a bill to abolish the travel tax passed the House in March 2026 pero pending pa sa Senate — until it becomes law, the tax is still collected. We track this weekly.

Step 4: The anti-offloading folder

Offloading — being pulled from your flight at Philippine immigration — is preventable. The folder: passport (6+ months from your RETURN date) · return ticket · confirmed accommodation printout · show money (cash + cards + bank certificate) · COE with approved leave dates or business documents · eTravel QR · and a clear itinerary you can explain.

Step 5: The airport flow, demystified

Arrive 3 hours early for international flights. The sequence: check-in (airline verifies your destination requirements — arrival cards checked here!) → immigration (the offloading checkpoint — folder ready) → final security → gate. Coming home: immigration again (eTravel QR) → baggage → customs.
