The big change: JVAC, not travel agencies

Since April 2025, tourist visa applications go through JVAC — the Japan Visa Application Center run by VFS Global — with branches in Parañaque, Makati, Quezon City, Cebu, and Davao. The decades-old system of applying through accredited travel agencies is gone for tourist applications. You book an appointment, submit your documents yourself, and track your application directly.

The best-kept open secret: the visa is FREE

Japan waives the visa fee for Philippine passport holders under a longstanding arrangement. And here's the part many blogs got wrong in 2026: when Japan raised its visa fees globally in July 2026 (single-entry jumped from ¥3,000 to ¥15,000), Filipinos remained exempt. The Embassy of Japan confirmed it — the visa is still gratis for us.

The requirements checklist

Passport valid 6+ months with blank pages · application form (downloadable) · ID photo · daily itinerary · flight and accommodation bookings · bank certificate or ITR (BIR 2316) · Certificate of Employment if employed, or business documents if self-employed. Sponsored? Add the guarantor's documents.

On funds: there's no official minimum, but a ₱50k–100k bank balance with consistent history is the comfort zone most approved applicants report. A sudden ₱100k deposit last week reads worse than a steady ₱60k.

Timeline and what you'll get

Standard processing runs about 5–7 working days; allow extra during peak seasons (spring sakura, December). First-time applicants are typically granted a single-entry visa for 15–30 days. Multiple-entry visas come later, with travel history.

Practical sequencing: secure the visa first, then buy non-refundable tickets. Book refundable or hold reservations for the application itself.

Common mistakes that sink applications

Inconsistent documents (your COE says employed until March, your itinerary says a 3-week April trip) · thin or freshly-padded bank records · incomplete itineraries · and the classic: paying fixers for things that are free. The application is designed to be done yourself.
